2004 Rookie Draft (Cont'd) - Ryan Howard

Yes, it's true! Ryan Howard is slated to be available in next year's Millennium League rookie draft. Born 11/19/70 in St. Louis, MO, Ryan played the 2003 campaign in high class A ball at Clearwater, FL. The big first basemen hit 23 homeruns, knocked in 82 runs and hit for a .304 average. Most likely, Howard will see considerable playing time with the AA Reading Phillies but could very well be playing next year at the major league level as well.

Darren Dreifort Pitches Unlikely No-Hitter

New York (AP) - San Francisco Giant righthander Darren Dreifort achieved what every pitcher dreams of - pitching a no-hitter at historic Yankee Stadium. The seldom used Giant pitcher kept the high scoring Yankee offense and partisan crowd subdued all evening. Dreifort walked two and struck out eight in his gem. His record improved to 3-0 with a 2.72 ERA for the season.
This is the second no-hitter of the season as the Angels' Jose Contreras pitched one against the Astros back in early April. For a complete list of Millennium League no-hitters, click here.

High Class A St. Lucie Mets third baseman David Wright figures to be selected high in the upcoming 2004 MSL draft. Born in Norfolk, VA on 12/20/82, Wright hit .270 with 15 homeruns and 75 RBI's for St. Lucie in 2003 and was named a Florida State League all-star. Wright was the 38th overall pick in the 2001 high school draft. He also signed a national letter of intent to play in college for Georgia Tech, but signed to play minor league ball instead.

2004 Rookie Draft - Matt Holliday

As our 2003 season starts to wind down, some teams are already looking forward to next season's draft. One of the top tier rookies that will be drafted very early next year is outfielder Matt Holliday. Born 1/15/80 in Stillwater, OK, Holliday was right at home playing for the 2003 AA Tulsa Drillers. Matt spent his second straight year at Double-A where he quietly enjoyed a solid season...although he hit just .253, Matt led Tulsa with 72 RBI...he tied for the team lead with 28 doubles and his career-best 132 hits trailed only Cory Sullivan (167) on the squad...also set personal highs in games (135), extra-base hits (45) and total bases (206)...Tulsa's everyday leftfielder, Holliday ranked T2nd in the Texas League with 15 outfield assists.....

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Charles Johnson blocked the plate, saving a run!

One run was the difference at Enron Field as the Toronto club defeated the

Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings 3 to 2.

The score was tied at 1 after nine. Toronto was victorious in the 10th

inning. Charles Johnson began things off when he smashed a bases-empty

'big-fly' (his 13th of the season). After an out was recorded, Brian Roberts

came to the plate and banged out a single. Miguel Cabrera then stroked a

single. Frank Thomas struck out, unable to help the rally. Vernon Wells

stepped into the box and hit a single resulting in an exciting win for

Toronto and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Both

teams ended up with 11 on the night.

Danny Graves(3-3) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Danys

Baez(1-1) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings allowing 4

hits and no walks.
