The strong Anaheim Angels pitching staff gave the fans an afternoon that
they'll never forget by tossing a combined no-hitter! The tension started to
build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified.
Anaheim finished with 11 hits in the victory.

The victory went to Blake Stein(3-3) who went 6 innings, allowing no runs.
Stein got help from Steve Rain who was credited with his 2nd save. Kenny
Rogers(9-10) was given the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 8
runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.

'You probably have a better chance of winning the lottery than this
happening,' said Stein who got credit for the win, 'I don't expect it to sink
in for awhile.' he said. 'You know, it's hard to say who was better, the
starter or the bullpen!'

Rondell White had 6 hits and 4 RBI as the Seattle Mariners defeated the San
Francisco Giants 12 to 5 at Pro Player Stadium.

White was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He laced a single in the 1st inning,
laced a base-hit in the 3rd inning, delivered a one-base hit scoring two
baserunners in the 4th inning, laced a base-knock in the 6th inning, smashed
a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 13th of the season) in the 8th inning and lined
a base-hit bringing in a run in the 9th inning. Seattle lit up the
scoreboard in the 4th inning when they had 4 runs on 5 hits and the 9th
inning with 5 runs on 5 hits. Seattle out-hit San Francisco for the game, 20
hits to 10.

Pete Harnisch(10-6) allowed 5 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory.
Mike Sirotka(10-12) was the loser. He was not very effective, surrendering 5
runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Players of the Block (Block 8)

In the American League, Braves centerfielder Andruw Jones leads the league in numerous offensive categories to earn the award. Jones batted .378 with an OBP of .548! In addition, he hit 8 home runs, had 16 RBIs and also scored 21 runs. Honorable mentions go to Sammy Sosa (7 HRs/15 RBIs) and Al Leiter (2-0, 0.50 ERA, 8 Hits in 18 IP).

In the National League, White Sox slugger Frank Thomas also had a notable block and earns the award. The Big Hurt batted .356 with an OBP of .542. He also launched 9 home runs and batted in 19. Honorable mentions go to Randy Johnson (3-0, 1.52 ERA) and Alex Ochoa (21 RBIs, .348 AVG).

The Toronto club registered 7 runs in the 1st inning and nipped the Anaheim
Angels 8 to 7 at Edison Int'l Field in a hard fought contest.

Toronto promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they blasted
Anaheim for 7 runs on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Chris Truby who quieted
the home crowd when he tripled scoring two baserunners. Toronto had a total
of 8 hits for the game.

Julian Tavarez(5-4) got the win allowing 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Tavarez
got help from Billy Koch who earned his 29th save. Jarrod Washburn(5-7) was
the loser. He gave up 1 hit and 2 walks in 1/3 of an inning.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Russ Granberry said after the game. 'Tavarez did not have
command of his pitches most of the night, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'

Brown(14-9) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't give up
much, just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Los Angeles had only 6 hits for
the night.

Andy Pettitte(10-15) was hit with the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 7

Sidney Ponson pitched a complete game and Miguel Cairo smacked a grand slam as
the Montreal Expos outscored the Oakland A's 8 to 3.

Cairo helped send the fans home happy. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam
homerun (his 1st of the season) in the 1st inning and slapped a base-hit in
the 8th inning. Montreal totaled 7 on the afternoon.

Ponson(7-16) was the winner allowing 3 runs for the game. The loss was charged
to Jason Schmidt(0-1). OPEN was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a
bad streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back. Now
maybe we can relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we are
capable.'

Center fielder Brian S. Giles had 2 base hits and Matt Clement mowed down 11
Minnesota batters as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Minnesota Twins by a

Clement(6-14) escaped virtually unscathed against the Minnesota hitters. He
was stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings
lowering his ERA to 4.66. Pittsburgh had 8 hits for the afternoon.

racking up. When told he had 11 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding?
Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that

Catcher Todd Hundley blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI at Kauffman Stadium as
the Kansas City Royals beat the Houston Astros by the count of 13 to
8.

Hundley enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He hit a bases-empty home run
(his 8th of the season) in the 4th inning, doubled plating two runs in the
5th inning and singled in the 7th inning. Houston was out-hit by Kansas
City, 16 hits to 11.

The win went to Rick Reed(8-8) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Danny Graves
earned the save, his 20th. Octavio Dotel(1-2) took the loss. He was touched
for 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Randy Johnson struck out 20 batters and Glenallen Hill left the yard and had 2
RBI as the Arizona team defeated the Cleveland Indians in 13 innings by a
score of 6 to 3 at The Ballpark.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Finally, Arizona pulled
the game out in the 13th inning. After an out was recorded, Hill got things
going when he lined a base-hit. Derek Bell stepped into the batter's box and
he slapped a single. Tony Womack then laced a single resulting in a run.
Luis Gonzalez came up and he doubled bringing in another run. Steve Finley
stepped into the box and hit a deep fly scoring the final run of the inning.
Arizona banged out 16 on the afternoon.

Johnson(18-12) allowed 3 runs on the game. Andrew Lorraine(3-2) was tagged
with the loss in relief. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11 hits and 7
walks in 6 innings.

Johnson was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good command of
all my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on.'

Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Florida won the
hard fought contest in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Preston
Wilson lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 24th of the season) giving Florida
the victory and sending the 31,130 home-town fans home happy. Florida rapped
out 7 hits for the night.

The victory went to Neagle(6-12) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Ron
Mahay(3-4) took the loss in relief. John Dean was asked about the
performance of Neagle, 'He had his good stuff out there tonight. The fans
really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to
give him even more adrenalin.'

Catcher Damian Miller had 2 base hits as the Arizona team rallied impressively
to win in dramatic style over St. Louis Cardinals, 6 to 5.

Arizona had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs on 3 hits.
Miller led off and started the rally when he slapped a one-base hit. Ron
Belliard stepped up next and he delivered a base-hit. Richie Sexson then
lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 22nd of the season) giving Arizona the
victory and sending the 45,085 home-town fans home happy. Arizona rapped out
7 hits for the afternoon.

The victory went to Lou Pote(5-0) who went 1/3 of an inning, allowing no runs.
Troy Percival(4-8) was hit with the loss in relief. 'Now there is a lesson
in perseverance for you,' Miller noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for
a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And
it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'

In a wild game, the red hot Cardinals scored a run on the ninth on a bases loaded walk to defeat Arizona 9-8. So far, on the road trip, St.Louis has gone 2-1 vs. Toronto and has taken the first game of this series with Arizona. At home, St. Louis recently went 4-2 vs. division leading Phialdephia.

Greg Vaughn smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals
outscored the Arizona club 9 to 8.

St. Louis won the game with a run in the top of the 9th inning. Jim Edmonds
drew a walk. Will Clark followed, but he was set down on strikes. One out
later, Vaughn stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Edgar Renteria
came up and he drew a walk to load the bases. Dave Hansen stepped into the
box and drew a walk scoring the run. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings,
Arizona could not get the win.

The victory went to Matt Morris(3-3) who went 2/3 of an inning, allowing no
runs. Troy Percival recorded the save, his 14th. Steve Kline(1-1) was hit
with the loss in relief. He allowed no hits and 3 walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Tom Glavine pitched 7 strong innings as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
Arizona ballclub 3 to 0 at Pacific Bell Park.

In the top of the 2nd inning Boston went on top for good scoring a single run
on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Rusty Greer laced a base-hit. One out
later, Einar Diaz stepped up to the plate and he doubled scoring the run.
That scoring would be all that was needed. Boston had 8 hits for the game
and Arizona had 5.

Glavine(12-10) went 7 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Glavine got
help from Derek Lowe who was credited with his 27th save. Bryan Rekar(6-6)
absorbed the loss. He allowed 5 hits and no walks in 6 innings.

defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 10 to 7 at Network Asc
Coliseum.

Pittsburgh scored 3 runs in the 6th inning. The highlight belonged to Jackson
who brought the crowd to their feet when he cleared the fences for a two-run
home run (his 9th of the season). Pittsburgh ended up with 12 hits for the
game while San Francisco had 9.
