Jay Payton blasted 2 homeruns at PNC Park where the St. Louis Cardinals beat
the Arizona ballclub in 12 innings by the score of 11 to 9.

The score was tied at 8 after nine. St. Louis came out on top in the 12th
inning. Edgar Renteria led off and started the rally when he lined a
base-hit. Melvin Mora got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.
Paul Konerko then banged out a single. Jim Edmonds came up and he doubled
knocking in a run. Payton stepped into the box and was walked intentionally
to load the bases. Placido Polanco kept the inning going and lashed a single
adding another two runs to their total. Polanco took second on the throw.
St. Louis finished with 12 hits in the victory.

Mike Koplove(3-2) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2 innings. The
losing pitcher was Ben Weber(3-2) in relief. 'They made a couple of mistakes
and I took full advantage,' Payton said 'next time I'm sure they'll pitch me
tougher.'

Gagne Thriving As Closer

After posting a combined 13-15 record and a 4.67 ERA as a starter over the past two seasons, Dodger pitcher Eric Gagne has found a home in the bullpen as the team's closer.

So far this season, Gagne has posted a 4-1 record with 15 saves. He has struck out 52 in just 30 innings of work. Eric has contributed either a win or a save in 19 of his team's 34 wins - a 56% ratio.

Yanks Obtain Shannon Stewart for Justice

The New York Yankees announced that they have obtained outfielder Shannon Stewart from the Chicago White Sox for outfielder David Justice and a second round draft pick. Stewart was hitting .279 with 3 homers and 14 runs batted in for the White Sox. Justice, finishing up his career in 2002, was hitting .283 with 6 dingers and 24 RBI's for New York. Chicago now owns three second round draft picks in the 2003 draft.

Buccos and Red Sox Making Noise in Koufax Division

Two teams, Pittsburgh and Boston, have been drawing attention in the Koufax Division. The main reason? You guess it - starting pitching.
The Buccos (47-31) have been challenging two-time division champs Arizona all season. Nearing the halfway point, the Pirates are just 1 1/2 games behind the Diamondbacks. Pittsburgh is third in the league in team ERA (3.64) and have outscored their opponents 415-315 so far this season. The Pirates, fourth place division finishers the last two seasons, sports a strong starting staff: Kerry Wood (8-2, 3.58), Barry Zito (9-5, 3.73), Roy Oswalt (5-5, 3.88) and Matt Clement (8-5, 3.56)
Boston (37-35), with a strong recent surge, looks to improve from their 5th place finish a year ago. Although 20th in the league in team batting average and 19th in team runs scored, pitching is carrying the Sox. Boston sports three of the top places in individual ERA: 2-Tim Wakefield (2.39), 3-Pedro Martinez (2.77) and 4-Derek Lowe (3.02). Boston ranks 2nd in team ERA (3.41) just behind Arizona. The Red Sox now have an outside chance to sneak into one of the wild card playoff slots.

White Sox Send Hunter to Houston for Harang

The Chicago White Sox, in an effort to acquire a young pitching arm, sent centerfielder Torii Hunter to Houston for rookie pitcher Aaron Harang. The teams also swapped 2003 draft picks with Chicago picking up Houston's second round pick in exchange for a third rounder.

Hunter, struggling this season for Sox, is hitting only .217 with 6 HR's and 25 RBI's. Torri was acquired during the 2001 season from Minnesota in exchange for the Sox' #1 Draft Pick. Ironically, that #1 pick ended up being the Lottery Winner as the Twins selected Carlos Zambrano.

Aaron Harang had just one start this season for the 'Stros: 8 IP, 1 Hit, and 9 K's.

D-Back's Big Unit Pitching Strong

One of the main reasons that Arizona is off to a league leading 38-19 mark has got to be Randy Johnson. The Big Unit is having another stellar season: 8-1, 1.81 ERA, 84 IP, 47 Hits Allowed, and 98 Strikeouts.
Johnson's prior 2 seasons were equally impressive:
2000: 21-12 3.08 ERA 344 K
2001: 23-10 2.79 ERA 335 K
Randy currently is the career leader in numerous Millennium League Pitching Categories which includes: innings pitched (637), strikeouts (777), and wins (52).

Vlad Still Hitting Above .400

With a third of the season now in the books, Phillies' right fielder Vladimir Guerrero is still hitting above .400. Playing in the cozy confines of Coors Field, Vlad leads the league in hitting with a .403 batting average which includes 18 HR's and 56 RBI's. Not your typical slugger, Guerrero has also swiped 25 bases this season.

Guerrero came to Philly during the middle of last season in a blockbuster trade with Montreal. Last season in 76 games with the Phils, Vlad hit .275 with 24 HR's and 67 RBI's.
