Maddux Dealt to Phillies

"Success in the regular season is great, but winning in the playoffs is what counts." That may have been the attitude and thoughts of the Atlanta Braves' front office after trading popular pitcher Greg Maddux and their round 6 pick to the Phillies for pitcher Brett Tomko, infielder Tony Womack and their first round draft pick.

Maddux compiled a brilliant 48-29 record with an overall 3.69 ERA these past three seasons with the Braves. The Braves made the playoffs two of the past three seasons, including nabbing the #1 seed in last year's playoffs.

However, Maddux post season stats (1-3, 5.09 ERA in six starts) were much different and may have contributed toward moving the righthander to another club. . . .

11,881 fans were treated to a fine game at Tropicana Field as only one run

separated the combatants at game's end. The Minnesota Twins ended a long

winless drought and won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Minnesota

pulled the game out in the 11th inning. Ichiro Suzuki delivered a solo blast

(his 4th of the season) giving Minnesota the win much to the delight of the

home town crowd. Minnesota had only 4 hits for the game.

Latroy Hawkins(3-1) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory.

Leo Estrella(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and

1 walk in 2 innings.

Giants Win Wild 18-Inning Game Over Angels

The San Francisco Giants defeated the Anaheim Angels in 18 innings by a score of 9-6. Both teams scored single runs in the 15th to prolong the encounter. Coco Crisp hit a two-run homer in the 18th to help San Francisco score three runs in the 18th.

This game's length narrowly missed tying the all-time Millennium record of 19 innings that occurred in the 2001 season (6/11/2001) between Montreal and San Francisco.

WEB GEMS- Bot 7th: David Eckstein robbed Miguel Cabrera of a base hit.

Left fielder Lance Berkman slammed 3 homeruns and had 11 RBI as the Houston
Astros smashed the overmatched Toronto ballclub, 21 to 6.

Berkman had a big day at the plate. He doubled plating a run in the 1st
inning, doubled plating two runs in the 2nd inning, smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly' in the 4th inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 5th inning,
smacked a three-run homer in the 6th inning, belted a three-run homer (his
6th of the season) in the 8th inning and delivered a base-hit in the 9th
inning. Houston bats were very productive in the 6th inning when they had 4
runs on 3 hits. The Houston offense man-handled the Toronto pitching staff
as they scored in 8 of the 9 innings.

Runelvys Hernandez(1-0) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win.
Elmer Dessens(1-4) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 18 hits and 3
walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Blue Jays Squad Improving

Last season, the Toronto Blue Jays were not a very good ball club. Last in the league in runs allowed and 19th in runs scored, the Blue Jays lost a league record 122 ball games. But this season is different - Toronto has started out with a respectable 9-12 record. Toronto's nucleus of young players Sabathia, Wells, Cabrera, Peralta, N. Johnson, and K. Greene appears solid and will be around for many seasons to come.

Cards Fast Start Out Of The Gate

The St. Louis Cardinals are off to the fastest start in Millennium League history with an early 14-4 record. "The team has been a surprise so far - but, when you hit .323 as a team, you don't lose many ball games," said Redbird skipper John Helmbrecht. The Cards currently lead the league in batting and are ranked third in team ERA (3.86), behind Oakland and Pittsburgh. However, a quick glance at the accompanying chart will show that a fast start does not always guarantee overall success. . . . . .

Big Papi Drives in Eight Runs in Twins Win

Minnesota's David Ortiz had a monster game for the hometown fans in a big win over Atlanta on April 19. Ortiz, who hit .265 with 19 homers in 388 at bats last season, seems posed to have a breakout season. Ortiz drove in 8 runs (the Millennium record is 9 by K. Caminiti) that included a grand slam.

David Ortiz smacked 2 homeruns as the Minnesota Twins topped the Atlanta

Braves by a score of 14 to 5 at Tropicana Field.

Ortiz was really 'in the zone'. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam

homerun in the 2nd inning, slapped a single in the 6th inning and lost the

ball over the fence for three runs (his 2nd of the season) in the 7th inning.

Minnesota ended up with 16 hits for the game while Atlanta had 8.

Josh Beckett(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 2/3 innings and

allowing 3 runs. Kevin Millwood(0-1) was charged with the loss. He was

unable to control the Minnesota offense and allowed 12 hits and 3 walks in 5

and 2/3 innings.

'Ortiz led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Beckett

said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'

Buccos Win 1-0 Thriller Over Boston in Playoff Rematch

The last time Pittsburgh and Boston met, Red Sox pitched Pedro Martinez walked off the mound with the first post season no-hitter in Millenium League history.
Pirates Carlos Guillen helped turn the tables with a dramatic RBI double in the bottom of the 10th to give Pittsburgh a thrilling 1-0 win over Boston. Guillen, in his fourth season with the Pirates, hit .255 with 6 home runs last season.

Hudson Helping A's to Fast Start

The Oakland A's are off to a fast 14-4 mark mainly due to their stellar starting pitching. Athletics starter Tim Hudson leads A's hurlers with a 3-0 record, 0.38 ERA, and just 13 hits allowed in 24 innings. Sporting a formidable staff that includes Hudson, C.Zambrano, Schmidt, Mulder and Webb, Oakland figures to vastly improve over last season's 66-96 record.
