Cardinals Acquire Benitez

St. Louis (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals made a move to strengthen the back end of their bullpen by acquiring closer Armando Benitez from the Cleveland Indians. Benitez, the 31 year old righthander from the Dominican Republic, has a 1.76 ERA with 9 saves for the struggling Indians this season. The move was a bit surprising as current closer Troy Percival is 13 for 13 in save opportunities this season with a 3.24 ERA. "Troy has done a fine job for us this season and will continue to play an important role in our team this season", says Cardinal skipper Helmbrecht. In exchange for Benitez, St. Louis traded their 2005 #2 draft pick as well as 30 year old righthander Bob Howry (4-1, 5.74 ERA).

Vizcaino Traded to Oakland

Oakland (AP) - The Oakland A's made the first trading move as playoff contenders start to strengthen their teams. The A's sent a 2005 third rounder to the Phillies in exchange for relief pitcher Luis Vizcaino. Through games of May 11th, Vizcaino had not pitched for Philadelphia, thus becoming expendable. Philadelphia, struggling a bit with a record of 26-28, might be starting to looking toward next season. Vizcaino has been drafted twice by the Phillies - as a 10th rounder in 2001 and a 13th rounder in 2003. In 2002, he posted a 2-10 mark, but saved 32 games and had a 3.76 ERA for Philadelphia.

Drew Jumpstarting Redbirds

St. Louis (AP) - Batting second ahead of sluggers Melvin Mora, Jim Edmonds, Jeremy Burnitz and Paul Konerko, J. D. Drew has been the catalyst to the Cardinals scoring machine this season. In the first 39 games, Drew has scored 40 runs. He has also hit .331 with 12 homers and 29 RBI's. In their first 39 games, the Cardinals lead the league with 239 runs scored - that's 6.12 runs per game and J. D. Drew has been an integral part of the Cardinals success this season. . . . .

Ichiro Paving The Way

Minnesota (AP) - Some good things are happening in Minnesota this season. The Twins, who have never finished above fourth place in the Aaron Division, seem poised to break out this year. Manager Bob Petersen has his squad playing at nearly a .600 clip with a record of 25-17. . . . ."Mr. Consistency", Ichiro Suzuki, is putting up some good numbers again this year with a .331 batting average. Ichiro was the second player taken in the 2001 draft (behind the Expos' selection of Pujols) - he has been a of consistency throughout his career fashioning a career .308 batting average. The Twins have improved themselves through the draft with players such as Beckett (2002), Matsui (2003) and LaRoche (2004). They also drafted Carlos Zambrano in 2002 and traded him to acquire Carlos Lee from Oakland. Add to that mix home grown players such as Santana and Ortiz and you can see why Minnesota is on the upswing.......

Lidge Off To Fast Start in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh (AP) - Drafted late in the first round of the 2003 Draft, newcomer Brad Lidge has taken over the closer role for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season. The 29-16 Pirates have opened up a four game lead over second place Arizona. One of the main reasons for the Buccos success this year is Brad Lidge. Lidge currently has converted 11 of 12 save opportunities with a 2.55 ERA. He has struck out 30 batters in just 18 innings - an amazing strikeout ratio. Lidge appears poised to become one of the premier closers in the league. . . . .

Bonds Leading Giants Resurgence

San Francisco (AP) - In each of the first four seasons of the Millennium League, the San Francisco Giants have had a winning record, making the post season three of those seasons. However, the Giants have never won a playoff series and own a 5-12 post season record.

Controversial superstar Barry Bonds is off to a strong start. Barry leads the league in batting (.400), homers (17), slugging pct (1.071), fourth in runs scored (38), and fifth in RBI's (38). In four previous seasons, Barry has hit .315 with 219 homers. The Giants currently trail the Marlins by 2 1/2 games in what is shaping up to be a two team race in the Brock Division. The Giants, with Barry leading the way, look to go deep into the playoffs this year.

Slow Starts. . . . .

Here is a list of some player’s who are struggling out of the gate: Anaheim’s Jim Brower is 2-2 with a staggering 9.46 ERA – not the middle relief help the Angels were looking for…...last season’s playoff hero, D-Backs Brian Lawrence is 2-6 with a 6.52 ERA………Atlanta’s centerfielder Andruw Jones is only hitting .201 in 154 at bats…..fourth round draft pick of the Red Sox, Eric Milton, is 2-5 with a 6+ ERA…..Chicago has struggled with a 12-24 mark and Doug Davis has chipped in with a 0-6 mark and 5.98 ERA……Cleveland’s Bartolo Colon is 2-5 with an ERA hovering close to 9.00……not much is going wrong for the 25-11 Marlins, but Adam Dunn is hitting just .217 with only 4 homers…..Houston was counting on Sean Burroughs to handle third base this season, but he is only hitting .185 with a single homer…..how about Kansas City’s Juan Cruz who is 0-6 with a 6.84 ERA in 20 games of relief?……last in the league in team batting average, the Dodgers have Shawn Green hitting just .213……Minnesota’s Paul Wilson is 1-6 with a 5.91 ERA……Montreal’s Scott Rolen is batting just .171……New York’s David Wells is winless with a 6.91 ERA…..2003 #1 draft pick of the A’s, Brandon Webb is 2-5 with an ERA close to 6.00…..Phillies’ Freddy Garcia apparently does not like the Phillies move to Yankee Stadium as he is 2-5 with a 6.49 ERA……Kris Benson has been the weak link in the impressive Bucco starting staff with a 1-4 record…..hard to find an underachiever for the Giants, but let’s go with reliever Ricardo Rincon and his 7.04 ERA….Jamie Moyer already has lost seven games for Seattle…. Matt Morris has a 5.84 ERA for St. Louis…..Vernon Wells is batting just .246 for Toronto……
