With the Cardinals up 5-4 in the top of the 9th, Boston scored 5 runs, highlighted by a Mark Teixeira grand slam, to take a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the 9th. However, in the bottom of the 9th, Jeremy Burnitz hit a game tying grand slam off Smoltz. After the crazy 9th inning, the bullpens took control and put up 6 shutout innings. Then in the 16th, Derek Lowe was brought in to relieve a tired Boston bullpen. With 1 out and a man on second, Vinny Castilla ended the game with a a 2-run walk off homerun. After a walk off homerun in the previous game, it started a forgettable trip for the Red Sox. |

WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Jim Edmonds robbed Mark Bellhorn of a Homerun!
Jeromy Burnitz ripped a bases loaded blast at Bank One Ballpark as the St.
Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Red Sox in 16 innings by the count of 11 to
9.
The score was knotted at 9 after nine innings. St. Louis came out on top in
the 16th inning. Robb Quinlan kicked off the action when he doubled. Two
outs later Vinny Castilla stepped in and he cracked a two-run shot (his 7th
of the season) resulting in a mighty exciting win for St. Louis and the
46,112 home town fans in attendance. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw
the lead change 5 times.
Orlando Hernandez(4-1) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Derek
Lowe(6-8) was charged with the loss in relief.
