Mark McGwire Retires From Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have cut Mark McGwire from their 17-man protected list and that he has retired. Big Mac, in his two seasons with the Redbirds, batted .302 with 56 Homers. McGwire's best MSL season for St. Louis was in 2000 when he hit .328 with 37 HR's and 98 RBI's in just 241 at bats - mostly against left handed pitching.

McGwire's best single game occurred on July 3, 2000 against the Philadelphia Phillies. McGwire hit 3 homeruns and drove in 7 runs at Coors Field in a 15-5 win over the Phillies.
