Ken Griffey Jr. smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Pedro Martinez racked up
an impressive total of 19 strikeouts as the Boston Red Sox defeated the
lifeless Toronto ballclub 8 to 1 at Enron Field.
Griffey Jr. provided the offensive punch. He hit a bases-empty home run in
the 3rd inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 9th of the season) in the 7th
inning. Boston had 10 hits for the afternoon.
The victory went to Martinez(6-2) who went the distance allowing 1 run. The
loss was charged to C.C. Sabathia(6-11). Martinez was asked about his big
strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these
numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands,
everything gets real still and quiet. Just strange - but it's nice to be
able to take the crowd out of the game.'
