Paul Byrd's Amazing Season

When you think of front line starting pitchers in the Millennium League, you probably might think of Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Roy Halladay, Curt Schilling or Kerry Wood. Not too many people would think of Paul Byrd. But Byrd is proving the skeptics wrong as he is turning in a sparkling season so far for the Bronx ers: 17-6 with a 3.93 ERA. Byrd leads the league in wins and games started and has been a dependable workhouse for New York all season.

Byrd, born in Louisville, Kentucky and a LSU college grad, was the eighth player selected in the 2001 draft (http://home.comcast.net/~helmbrej/msl/2001draft.htm).

Camden Yards - Home of the Mariners

Camden Yards has always been a welcome home for the current world champion Seattle Mariners. Last season, Seattle had a gaudy 52-29 record at cozy Camden Yards during the Mariners championship season. This season, Seattle is 29-25 at home.

Seattle was 6-0 at home in the playoffs last season which included two heart stopping extra innings wins vs. the Dodgers in round 1 of the playoffs. (Click here for box scores.)

Helton Having Another Big Season

It doesn't matter where Todd Helton Helton plays - he always hits. Traded to Montreal in the middle of the 2001 season, Todd is having another banner season: .353 average, 22 HR's and 75 RBI's. Helton also has a whopping .447 on base percentage.

Playing for the Phillies and Expos in 2001, Todd hit for a combined .288 average with 38 HR's and 107 RBI's. Helton, always an excellent fielder, combines with third basemen Scott Rolen to provide the Expos with strong fielding at the corner positions.

Anaheim's Carlos Delgado is currently leading the league with 30 homers. Carlos has already driven in 67 runs , walked 59 times and carries a .370 on base percentage. Acquired in the 2001 season from Toronto, Delgado has been an important cog in the Angel offense.

Expos to Open 2003 Season in Great American Ballpark

Construction is well underway for the Expos' new home at "Great American Ballpark" (in foreground). Cinergy Field, the Expos present home, is displayed in the background. It is expected that the new stadium will be ready when Montreal opens their 2003 season.

Coors Field - Home of the Phillies

When you think of the Philadelphia Phillies, you think of offense - you think of their great list of sluggers on their current roster: Guerrero, Pujols, Tejada and Chavez. And you also think of their homerun friendly ballpark - Coors Field.

Phillie fans have witnessed many exciting games over the years at Coors Field. In fact, Philadelphia has led the league in homeruns the past two seasons. This season, Philadelphia has mixed some strong pitching (Redman 12-4 3.19 ERA, Lopez 10-2 3.06ERA, Jennings 7-4 3.93 ERA) to go with their always formidable offense. . . . . .

Trading Deadline - Sunday, July 15th

The League Office has announced that this season's trading deadline will be Sunday, July 15th (after Block 7 has been completed). Free agents may continue to be signed throughout the rest of the season.

Braves On a Roll - Lead Division by 14 1/2 Games

Atlanta righthanders Kevin Millwood and John Lackey are geting it done for the division leading Braves. Millwood, in his third season for Atlanta, is 10-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 19 starts. Rebounding from a dissapointing 6-11 record and a 6.42 ERA last season, Kevin has been a model of consistency for the Braves.

John Lackey, the 9th player selected in the 2001 draft, is currently 9-3 with a 3.92 ERA. Lackey has given up just 6 homeruns in his 15 starts.

The Braves, after finishing with a record 105 wins in the inaugural 2000 season, missed the playoffs last season. However, Atlanta is leading the weak Killebrew division by a whopping 14 1/2 games this season and is a sure bet to make the playoffs.

Yankees Acquire Wells and Foulke for Playoff Run

The New York Yankees, an almost certainty to make this season's playoffs, made a bold trade to pick up two quality arms. The Bronx Bombers traded away pitcher Andy Ashby (4-0, 3.19 ERA), infielder Damian Rolls (.226, 0 HR 7 RBI), and their 2003 #1 and #4 picks to the White Sox for pitchers David Wells (4-5, 3.95 ERA), Keith Foulke (4.68, 17 Saves) and infielder Lou Merloni. New York now has a starting rotation that includes: Wells, Clemens, Byrd, Pettite, and Valdes.

The White Sox, 4th place in the Aaron division, is already looking ahead to next season and has been busy acquiring draft picks.
