San Francisco outfielder Ellis Burks earns the AL honors for the first block of 2002. He led the league in RBIs (25), Runs Scored (25) as well as batting average (.455). In addition to that, he belted 6 home runs and recorded a SLG percentage of .727.
RYAN KLESKO (NYA) -- NL Batter of the Block
New York slugger Ryan Klesko was an easy choice for the NL award this block. His incredible 32 RBIs in 21 games help lead NY to their early season dominance in the NL. In addition to his RBIs, he batted .429 with 11 doubles and 6 home runs.
ORLANDO HERNANDEZ (SEA) -- AL Pitcher of the Block
Seattle starter Orlando Hernandez became the first 4 game winner of the season in the AL, winning all 4 of his starts. His ERA for the block was 2.20 and he struckout 19.
PAUL BYRD (NYA) -- NL Pitcher of the Block
Another New Yorker joins Klesko in the NL with an award of his own. Paul Byrd was 6-0 in the first block of the season. In his 42 innings of work he allowed only 28 hits and recorded an ERA of 2.79.

In an embarrassing outing for the reeling Florida Marlins pitching staff,
seemingly unstoppable Seattle Mariners flexed their collective muscle
amassing 21 runs as Ryan Franklin(2-2)with bullpen support allowed Florida 7
runs.
Alex Rodriguez enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He smacked a single in
the 4th inning, doubled bringing in a run in the 5th inning and blasted a
two-run home run (his 4th of the season) in the 6th inning. Seattle bats
were very productive in the 4th inning when they had 5 runs on 5 hits and the
9th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits. The Seattle offense poured
it on, scoring in 8 of the 9 innings.
The losing pitcher was Brad Penny(1-2). He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and
5 walks in 4 innings. Seattle won for the 7th straight time. Mike Petersen
was in a talkative mood after the ballgame. 'Fellows, I don't know what to
tell you. our guys are just playing lights out lately. Everything and
everybody is just really hitting on all cylinders. I know it can't last
forever - but that isn't going to stop us from trying!'

Royals Send Ismael Valdes to Yankees
The Kansas City Royals sent starting pitcher Ismael Valdes to the New York Yankees in exchange for a 2003 3rd round draft pick. Last season, Valdes made 23 starts for the Royals while posting a 9-6 record with a 4.38 ERA. The Yankees have been recently fortifying their starting staff - picking up Andy Ashby as an early round 2002 draft pick and now Valdes to bolster the back end of their rotation.
A's Aramis Ramirez Hits Walk-Off Homer in 15th Inning
In a marathon game between St. Louis and Oakland, the Athletics came out on top as Aramis Ramirez hit a two-out two-run homer in the bottom of the 15th to give Oakland a 7-5 win. Oakland used seven pitchers, including Jason Schmidt for the final two innings to get the victory. Although the Cards outhit Oakland 20-13, they left 16 batters on base. |

Ramon Hernandez blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Oakland A's topped the
St. Louis Cardinals in 15 innings by a score of 7 to 5 at SAFECO Field.
The score was tied at 5 after nine. Finally, Oakland pulled the game out in
the 15th inning. Raul Ibanez led off the inning for Oakland when he slapped
a single. After another out, Carlos Lee dug into the batters box next, but
he struck out. Aramis Ramirez then cleared the fences for a two-run home run
(his 1st of the season) making Oakland victorious to the delight of the the
home town crowd. This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead
changed hands 5 times.
The win was credited to Jason Schmidt(3-0) who went 2 innings allowing no
runs. Kerry Ligtenberg(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.
Carlos Zambrano makes his MSL debut against the Red Sox
| Zambrano impressed in his debut giving up only 4 hits, striking out 5 in 6 2/3 innings. He was charged with the loss though as his Twins fell 2-1 to Boston. Jose Cruz, Jr. hit a 7th inning solo homerun against Zambrano, which ended up to be the difference. |

In a game for the baseball purist, Mike Maroth(1-0) and Carlos Zambrano(0-1)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Boston Red Sox finally emerged
victorious over Minnesota Twins, 2 to 1.
Maroth pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 6 innings surrendering 8
hits and 3 walks. Maroth got help from John Smoltz who pitched great and

Albert Pujols slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI at Yankee Stadium where the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Yankees 10 to 9.
Philadelphia scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 8th inning when they
scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Brad Wilkerson who
helped quiet the crowd when he doubled which was good for two runs.

Sammy Sosa Dealt to White Sox
For the second time in two seasons, Sammy Sosa has been traded. This time, Arizona has sent the right-hand hitting slugger to Chicago along with a third round draft pick in 2003 for Magglio Ordonez. (Trade will be effective for Block 2).

Schilling Gets Nod Over Johnson in Arizona Opener
Curt Schilling has been named the Arizona opening game starter for the second straight season. Schilling won a tightly contested spring training battle with fellow ace Randy Johnson for the honor. Johnson, the 2 time Cy Young award winner, seemed okay when asked about the decision, and said "The competition between Curt and I makes us both better pitchers and helps the team."
Cards 2001 #1 Pick Gets Nod in Opener
The St. Louis Cardinals announced that Odalis Perez will be their starting pitcher for their season opener in Montreal. Perez, the #14th pick in the 2001 draft, is being counted on to provide a boost to the Cards rotation over the next couple of years. "We've lost a lost of offense for the 2002 season" stated skipper John Helmbrecht. "So, we are going to need to depend on our pitching to help get us through this season." Last season St. Louis, playing in a NL-Park, finished third in team batting average and seventh in runs scored. "I do not expect we will come anywhere near these rankings this year", said John.

Seattle Announces Opening Day Starter
Defending Champion Seattle Mariners have announced Jamie Moyer as their opening day starter against Florida. Moyer, in his third season with Seattle, compiled a 12-10 mark with a 4.22 ERA in 2001. Last year in the post season, Jamie posted a 2-1 mark which included a 6-2 win over Oakland in the third game of the championship series.

Front line starting pitchers are always tough to come by, and that is what the Cleveland Indians did by taking Mark Prior with the second pick in the draft. Toronto, picking third, wasted little time in selecting Travis Hafner. Toronto manager Robert Emrich remarked that he was surprised that Travis was available at #3. Boston, solid with starting pitching already (Pedro Martinez, Wakefield, Glavine and Derek Lowe), decided to go with speed and defense by selecting left fielder Carl Crawford. Florida might have been the biggest winner in the early draft selections by picking Jake Peavy at #5.

Big "Z" Number #1 Pick
The Minnesota Twins, lucky winners of this year's draft lottery, selected Carlos Zambrano as the #1 pick. The 6' 5" 250 lb. 21 year old righthander was born in Venezuela on June 1, 1981. The Twins have been building quite a formidable starting staff which includes Johan Santana, Roy Halladay, Zambrano and Josh Beckett (selected with the 6th pick in the first round).

Mark McGwire Retires From Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have cut Mark McGwire from their 17-man protected list and that he has retired. Big Mac, in his two seasons with the Redbirds, batted .302 with 56 Homers. McGwire's best MSL season for St. Louis was in 2000 when he hit .328 with 37 HR's and 98 RBI's in just 241 at bats - mostly against left handed pitching.McGwire's best single game occurred on July 3, 2000 against the Philadelphia Phillies. We will be conducting our draft lottery on Wednesday, January 17th and Thursday, January 18th.....
The “Pennsylvania Daily Number NITE” lottery (http://www.palottery.state.pa.us/) on subsequent nights (7PM EST) will be used to decide who gets the #1 and #2 picks in the first round only. If the second pick yields the same result as the first night, then a third night’s lottery drawing will be used. The remaining 10 teams will draft in reverse order of record. So, the team with the poorest record can do no worst than pick third in the first round.

LANCE BERKMAN (HON) -- AL Batter of the Block
Houston outfielder Lance Berkman earns the AL honors. He led the league in RBIs (21) in the final 2 weeks of the season. In addition to that, he batted an impressive .425 with 5 Home Runs and SLG percentage of .900.
MAGGLIO ORDONEZ (CHA) -- NL Batter of the Block
Magglio led the NL this block with his 15 runs scored and was a closed 2nd with a .400 batting average. He also tied for the NL lead in RBIs with 11.
JOEL PINEIRO (SFN) -- AL Pitcher of the Block
San Francisco rookie pitcher Joel Pineiro goes 2-0 for the block with an ERA of 1.13. In his 3 starts he allowed only 10 hits in 24 innings of work while striking out 18.

Shortstop Jose Hernandez smashed 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI and Kevin Jarvis
came through with a solid 6 innings at Pacific Bell Park as the very potent
Arizona team belted the Minnesota Twins by the count of 13 to 0.
Hernandez was spectacular at the plate. He ripped a solo home run in the 3rd
inning, rifled a three-run blast in the 4th inning, cracked a two-run shot
(his 18th of the season) in the 6th inning and slapped a base-hit in the 8th
inning. Arizona finished with 14 hits while Minnesota ended up with 2.
Jarvis(12-7) went 6 innings allowing no runs for the win. Johan Santana(1-1)
was the loser. He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 4 innings of work.
'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park tonight,' Hernandez said.
'I'm glad I decided to play!'
