Cardinals Win World Series


St. Louis (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals won their first Millennium League Championship last night by beating Atlanta in five games. A recap of the series:
Game 1 - STL 12, ATL 3 - Cards batted around in the third inning by scoring seven runs and knocking Rich Harden out of the game. Melvin Mora hit two homers and drove in five runs. Jake Westbrook won his third post season game by pitching a complete game. Cards hit six homers in the game.
Game 2 - STL 8, ATL 5 - Redbirds again knock out a Brave starter early (John Lackey) by taking an early 7-2 lead. Dontrelle Willis gets the win.
Game 3 - STL 5, ATL 1 - Woody Williams limited Atlanta to two hits over 7+ innings and Jim Edmonds hit his 6th homer of the post season to put Atlanta into a 3-0 series hole.
Game 4 - ATL 13, STL 8 - Braves jumped out to an early 13-1 lead in the fifth knocking out Jake Westbrook. John Thomson improved to 4-0 in the post season and leadoff hitter Ray Durham had 4 hits which included two homers in the rout.
Game 5 - STL 10, ATL 6 - Dontrelle Willis pitched strong into the eight inning and Johnny Estrada drove in four runs. Armando Benitez closed out the ninth and finished with a 0.00 ERA and four saves in the post season.
